More than just something to eat, those dishes are part of the identity of those regions. If you come from Alsace for example, everybody knows that you eat choucroute for breakfast. Joking of course ! But you see the point.
Located in the Alps, Haute Savoie’s typical dishes are rough like its mountains, full of melted cheese and you will probably need a bit of time to recover from it ! It’s also the reason why there is Genepy: a strong, locally made alcohol but that’s another story…
Typical dish n° 1 : Tartiflette
Potatoes, onion and bacon gratin on which you melt a whole Reblochon (local cheese).
Typical dish n° 2 : Raclette
A friendly dish where you melt slowly a Raclette cheese in a small personal oven and then pour it on potatoes and ham regularly during the whole meal. Magic ! Very difficult to know when to stop ! Ok ok, raclette cheese is from Switzerland but still you will find it a lot around here.
Typical dish n°3 : Fondue Savoyarde
Typical mountain dish where you put a piece of bread on long necked fork and then plunge it into a pot full of melted cheese, kept warm over a small burner.
Yes, another dish from Switzerland BUT we have our own recipe, that’s why we call it Fondue Savoyarde. We use local cheese such as Comté, Beaufort, Gruyère de Savoie, Abondance…
Typical dish n°4 : Diots et Crozets
Diots are local porc sausages and crozets are local little square pasta.
In this dish, the diots are cooked in white wine and the crozets are made as a gratin with beaufort cheese.
You can find those dish in many restaurants of Annecy and it’s region. Usually, you need to be at least 2 persons to order a Raclette or a Fondue.
Of course there are others to discover and that was just a small list of the most popular ones.

Highly recommended! I spent two months and now I can speak basic conversational french. Instructors really care about students learning to speak french. And they have a lot of extracurricular activities around Annecy. I am going back again this year!
